Zdenek Konvalina is a Berlin based contemporary painter. The Czech born multidisciplinary artist gained international recognition as a performing artist. In more recent years, Konvalina has developed his abstract expressionist practice.
He describes his artistic process, as an interchange of formula and the individual pursuit of his own ideas, thoughts, memories and reminders, or future notes, with each painting striving to tell its own story. The formula that Konvalina follows, is a combination of spray gun and brush whereby the artist will play with the dynamic between these two tools. Increasingly he has begun to explore a variety of different tools in his work including it oil stick, oil pastels marker, fingers, tip of the brush and airbrush.
The process itself is a vital element in Konvalina’s work, as is central to abstract expressionist practices. Speaking on this, Konvalina explains;
“I have an appropriate idea of the composition and the balance I want to achieve but going through the process often it takes it to a new place. Movement in itself is an important aspect of my work, in addition to each mark creating a move on the painting, it is my own body movement, the energy and the brush movement. The paintings then retain some of it and the artworks are sort of active and performative as much as the process itself.”
